๐Ÿ“… Guess the Year

Guess the Year does not require exact recall. It scores you on how close you land, across three rounds, out of three thousand points.

The basics

You get three events, one at a time. Drag the handle along the timeline, which runs from 1900 to the present, and lock in your answer.

After each lock the real year appears next to yours with the gap between them, and your score for that round is added to the running total.

Scoring rewards closeness

You are not being asked to be right. You are being asked to be near. The score falls off as the gap widens, so an answer two years out is worth far more than an answer twenty years out, and an answer twenty years out is still worth more than a wild stab.

This changes the strategy completely. There is no reason to gamble on a precise year you half remember when you can confidently place the decade.

Bracket, then narrow

Work in two passes. First decide the era from the broadest thing you know about the event. Then look for a detail that moves you within it.

  • Technology in the description. What existed, and what clearly did not.
  • The people involved and roughly when they were prominent.
  • Whether the event sounds like a first, which usually pins it to the front of a decade rather than the middle.

A worked round

The clue mentions a moon landing. You know that is the late sixties, so you drag to 1969 and lock. Easy round.

The next clue is vaguer, something about a film opening. You cannot date it precisely, but you know the format it was released in and roughly who starred. That gets you to the early eighties. Rather than agonising over 1981 versus 1983, drop the handle in the middle of your range. Landing one year off scores nearly the same as landing exactly, and it protects you from being three years off in the wrong direction.

Tips worth remembering

  • Always answer in the middle of your uncertainty, not at the edge of it.
  • Decide the decade before you touch the slider, then use the slider only to fine tune.
  • Do not let a strong first round make you overconfident in the third. The events are independent.
  • Arrow keys nudge the handle one year at a time if the drag feels imprecise.
