Slowpy

Slowpy is the downhill sibling of JustRace. A new slalom course appears every day, everyone skis the same one, and your official run sets your place on the leaderboard.

Play Slowpy ↗
  1. 1A new downhill slalom every day, the same course for everyone.
  2. 2Go through every gate. If you miss one, respawn at the last checkpoint.
  3. 3Tuck on the straights and carve the turns. Brake as little as you can.

The basics

Every day there is a new course down the mountain, built from that day's seed so every player gets exactly the same hill. You ski it once for real, and that official time goes on the leaderboard.

Steer with A and D, push with W and brake with Ctrl. Shift tucks for speed on the straights and carves tighter when you hold it with a turn. Space jumps, the arrow keys flip and spin, and Q or E grabs.

Like JustRace, it runs on its own address, so it opens separately from the puzzle games.

Try it

A tiny version of Slowpy to play with. It is not today's puzzle, so nothing here spoils anything.

Gates and checkpoints

The course is marked with alternating red and blue gates. You have to pass through every one. Miss a gate and the run tells you, and the fix is to press R to respawn at your last checkpoint and take it again.

A respawn costs you time, but a missed gate costs you the run, so if you are going to be late for a gate, scrub some speed rather than hoping.

Speed is easier to keep than to make

The fastest skiers are not the ones who go straight down. They are the ones who never brake hard. A turn that is started early and carved smoothly keeps far more speed than a late turn with a skid at the end.

Tricks look great but you lose time if you land badly, so save them for practice and freeride.

Worked example

How a good run goes

Off the start, tuck and build speed. As the first gate comes up, start your turn well before you reach it so you pass the pole already heading toward the next one. You should be crossing the fall line between gates, not at them.

Halfway down, a tight pair of gates catches you late. Instead of slamming on the brakes at the gate, you give up a little speed one gate earlier with a sharper carve. It feels slower, but you make every gate and finish with a clean run.

Tips worth remembering

  1. 1Look two gates ahead, not one. Your line through this gate is decided by where the next one is.
  2. 2Tuck whenever you are pointing roughly downhill and do not need to turn.
  3. 3Carve instead of braking. Shift with a turn tightens your arc without throwing speed away.
  4. 4If you miss a gate, respawn right away. Every second spent deciding is a second on the clock.
