Foley plays half a second of a muffled everyday sound. Name it in six guesses. Every miss plays a longer, clearer stretch.
How it works
Tap play to hear the clip, then type what you think it is and pick it from the list. Only names on the list can be guessed, so a typo never costs you a guess.
If you're wrong, or you skip, the next play is longer and less muffled: half a second, then one, two and four seconds, then the full clip, and finally the full clip with no muffling at all.
The muffling
The game runs the sound through a low-pass filter, which keeps the low rumble and rhythm and hides the bright details. Each stage lets more of the high end through.
The recordings
Every sound is a real recording from Freesound, released into the public domain under Creative Commons 0. The original recording and its author are credited at the end of each round.
Example
The first half second is just a muffled scrape. On the second play it carries on a little longer and a little brighter. By the third you can hear the teeth clicking along one by one: a zipper.
Tips
- 1Listen for rhythm first. Repeating sounds and one-off sounds narrow things down fast.
- 2Headphones help, especially in the early, muffled stages.
- 3Skipping is the same as a wrong guess, so guess if you have any idea at all.
